I asked way back whether anybody knew about how to select a colour space for working on a monochrome picture. Seems like nobody did.
I’ve been trying to piece together an answer, and, for what it is worth, this is where I’ve got to.
The colour component of a colour space is not relevant. That [...]
I was trying to figure out how a part of QTR (Quad Tone RIP) worked and I noticed that a new update to the software now supported my main printer, and had implemented carbon black printing on it.
Carbon black printing is the current name for what used to be called ‘black only’ printing. That [...]

I know some people have been following my experiences with the Cone/Piezography K7 inkset with interest. I thought I would write down a little about how I got there and what I think about being there – whilst it is all still [...]
This morning’s experience has convinced me to get on and give continuous ink for the K7 inkset a try. Four cart changes for three prints (one before each print and one because the tab on the cart which holds it in place broke).
As the K7 cartridges do not install without a head clean (it [...]
I’ve just remembered to go back to Quad Tone RIP to pay my shareware dues. As this is a couple of weeks later than would seem polite, I’m happy to give them a bit of free publicity here.
There has been a recent update to version 2.5, and amongst other things this has added support [...]
A couple of quick notes as my experience grows using the Cone Neutral K7 inkset:
- although I haven’t left the printer for any extended period, I have gone several days without using it and have not had any blocked jet problems.
- however, I am getting nozzle problems when I change a cartridge. The symptom [...]
I’ve just replace ink cartridges 3 and 5, which suggests that my understanding of likely ink usage from the graph is correct. Cart 4 is low, and cart 2 will be the one after it. Carts 1, 6 & 7 are still two thirds full.
This is an attempt to interpret the data in the profile being used by the Quad Tone RIP for the K7 Piezography inkset.
Each line represents one of the densities of ink (7 neutral black cartridges in all). The paper involved is Photo Rag, but that isn’t particularly relevant. I’ve taken the numbers off [...]
The K7 inkset isn’t a variable tone inkset. When you get to the toning controls in QTR (which was built for the quad tone inksets which are variable tone) you just jump over the relevant (irrelevant) bits of the dialogue.
Buried in the small print is a short piece of advice which says that you [...]
I chose the Piezography/Cone K7 inks for my Epson R2400 monochrome experiment (supplier site).
The buying experience was OK, although I was nearly put off by an indicated very high postage charge. The actual charge, at about a third of the quote, was much more reasonable. The ink arrived, only slightly delayed by customs, [...]
