SoFoBoMoGo

I’m starting on April 3rd. I can’t devote endless time to the project, but I’m pretty sure that I can devote enough. And certainly I ought to be able to flow through the 31 days without any major breaks or stoppages. I’ll be making a (near) daily entry here on this blog and posting edits and selections both here and larger copies of likely picks on Today. It won’t be unmitigated sofobomo coverage, but it’ll probably get a bit intense. Soz, and all.
The basic kit is what you see in the pic. I’m going to walk the walk(s) in the book – just like any tourist visitor to the city might. I’ll be adding in some off-piste meanders through other areas just to stop the subject matter being all champagne and caviar.
I’m not going to be super strict about it being a one-camera-one-lens affair, but I’ll only be carrying what you can see in the picture most days. I’ll reserve wider, faster, or longer lenses for special occasions when I predict in advance that they’ll be useful. I also have a brick of Neopan 1600 which I’ll dip into on a few late evenings.
For the record, that is a Leica camera, Konica lens, Voigtländer lenshood and a Zeiss lenscap.
Unless something goes wrong in the actual production of the book, I’m planning to use Apple’s Pages for the pdf generation. Page shape will be square, so that I don’t have to worry about verticals and horizontals. Layout will be chronological. One question I’m still pondering is whether to caption the photos. I don’t like text on the same page as a photo. In a paper book that can be dealt with by putting text on a facing page. This makes it available to be seen, but also possible to be ignored. The slide show type quality of a pdf book changes this option. Making people page through alternate nearly blank pages doesn’t work, and anyway puts too much emphasis on the caption. Sticking all the captions together at the back is clumsy. Creating mouseover effects is beyond me and anyway some people will find them annoying or will have incompatible software. Issue unresolved.
Between now and the start date I’ll be doing some photography in other genres. Specifically there’ll be some digital stuff of the early spring plants. Good for eye practice but distant enough that my Aberdeen walkabout won’t seem stale when it starts. The camera and lens need a bit of a clean, but apart from that its Go.

Heresy on top of heresy. Next thing you know you’ll be sending your Ilford films off for developing at a lab that uses Kodak chemicals.
I guess this means the Konica 35 survived the RF lens purges of Spring 08.

SoFoBoMoGo. Sounds good. Let’s get all the other SoFoBoMoXxxxo’s out of the way now, sort of like a palette cleanser or sorbet:
SoFoBoMoNo! for when it all goes wrong
SoFoBoMoFlo for the layout
SoFoBoMoSlo for the mid month hump
any more for any more ?

Having never been inside Aberdeen, I would love to walk the town doing a book in April but… . My kit would be the map (only to know where I had been), an Olympus E-330 and a Zuiko OM 21mm lens (42mm equivalent). Oh well, back to the lambing and woodland tidying!
